Cyntoia Brown was an average teenager in an American town. But a series of bad decisions led the 16-year-old into a situation that ended with her killing a man who had picked her up for sex. She was sentenced to Life in a Tennessee Prison meaning, in her case, she will serve a minimum of 51 years. This film challenges our assumptions about violence and explores how factors such as biology and family history can doom some young people from the start.

Nate’s Kitchen

This is a portrait of Nate, the head chef of the soup kitchen at the Church of the Advocate in North Philly. Nate cooks for nearly 150 people a day. But to him, his job means more than simply feeding people. This short documentary follows Nate preparing lunch, but it also delves deeper, exploring why he feels the need to do this job and how his past experiences helped drive him back to the church.

The Calling

A behind-the-scenes look at young Americans — Christian, Jewish, Catholic, and Muslim — preparing to become the nation’s next generation of religious leaders, The Calling follows their transformation from idealistic students into ordained religious professionals. This four-hour special event explores the forces that are drawing a new generation of young people to serve their communities and their faith.

Deep Down: Beverly May and Terry Ratliff grew up on opposite sides of a mountain ridge in eastern Kentucky, where coal is king. When a mountaintop removal coal mine encroaches on their community, the two find themselves on opposite sides of a debate that divides their community and the world — who controls, consumes, and benefits from the planet’s dwindling supply of natural resources? In a small town in dire economic straits and high unemployment, the coal company’s offer to buy land and provide jobs can be hard to resist. What can a community do when it must choose between its present and its future?

Jump in on a gathering at the central New Jerusalem house [2011 W Norris St] this Saturday, May 8th, at 6pm!

Philly-area co-Conspirators [the simple way, the Alternative Seminary, Circle of Hope, Camden House(s), etc.] are getting together for a potluck and the first-ever local manifestation of a CONSP!RE magazine roundtable discussion.

The latest issue, Path and Place, deals with the interaction of physical location and spiritual movement. The editors have put together a study guide to help us dive in (which can be downloaded HERE), so take some time to wrestle through your own experience; then plan on bringing your reflections and some food to share.

You can also plan to pick up a copy of the latest issue Saturday night if you haven’t yet had an opportunity.

Contact Jason C. [jason@thesimpleway.org] for details/RSVP or contact Justin [williams.justinlee@gmail.com; 215.763.8806] if you’re volunteering to cook up a pan of his favorite baked macaroni.
